It works by first registering the face of each employee. This records a digital (3D) equivalent of their face (not a photo). Then once registered, the employee simply faces the camera on the time clock to clock in.

The biggest advantage is preventing buddy punching. It's virtually impossible for an employee to clock in for another or try to trick the system. Holding a photo of someone else will not work.

Another big advantage is being touch-less. No need to be concerned about employees having to touch something that may contain germs.

And like fingerprint time clocks, an advantage is simplicity. It doesn't required a badge, RFID card, or paper time card that can be forgotten, lost, or damaged.

Be aware that using biometrics has become a delicate issue in the US. The lead state is Illinois which opened the door to lawsuits on businesses. So make sure you stay compliant to your local laws. This may include getting written approval from your employees before registering their face, and a policy that states you will delete their biometric data at the end of employment.
