For the past 4 years I was using a time clock that had a nice digital interface but didn't have any subscriptions, etc. When that one decided to break on us, I looked around and realized nearly all the time clocks these days are asking you to subscribe to their online services... and frankly I'm not in the mood to pay extra every month just to do time cards. So... being a rather small business I decided to get this one and just go with paper cards. Yes, there is some expense in getting the cards but once you have a stack of them they last quite a while since you're using 1 card every 2 weeks per person. There's really nothing much to setting this up... It pretty much just goes based on setting up the time/date. As long as the same employee uses the same card for punching in and out it does a great job of totaling the time on the card. When it's payroll time I just collect the cards and enter the numbers into our Quickbooks payroll. It takes a little more manual work than the digital one I had before, but again: no subscriptions, etc. We've not had any issues with the cards feeding... seems to do a great job and just prints out the time in nice easy to read numbers. It's accurate down to the .00 hour which makes it easy to have accurate time reporting. The cards have fields for a bunch of data but with most modern payroll systems you probably just need the name on there so you know who has which card.
